The IVC filter is to prevent blood clots from entering the heart, lungs, kidneys or brain by snagging the clots in the blood, and then allowing them to disintegrate over time. The filters, many times are used by patients who are not able to take anticoagulant drugs (medications that help stop blood clots).

Best practices is that the filter be removed from the patient within 6 to 12 weeks after being inserted into the vein. The longer the filter remains in the patient, the harder it is to remove, and the greater risk of injuries.
